Touch down in Doha
After a very chilly but sunny few days in Istanbul we happily touched down in Doha Qatar via an hour in Dubai transfer lounge. Bright and early – 8am to be exact Beno, Claire’s brother was there to meet us coffee in hand. After a quick introduction to the nail biting ‘rag ead ‘drivers as Ben calls them and a mad whistle stop tour, we checked out his presidential suite in the crown plaza, took a shower and checked into the adjoining room. Claire and Ben did the checking in honours as Danny was scared of being arrested despite Claire’s fake wedding ring bought in Istanbul’s grand bazaar.

The streets and houses are made of gold!
Eating like a Sultan
A quick taxi ride to the far side of town we arrived at one of the 5 star establishments in Doha. This place is for the filthy rich, everything is pristine and oh so posh. Thankfully Danny squeezed into one of Ben’s designer shirts as the Barnsley one wouldn’t hold up at the door for sure.
Friday is a holiday in Qatar so out comes the infamous Friday brunches. Basically, a 5 star dining delight in each hotel which involves an eat as much as you can affair- Danny was obviously gutted by this prospect (not), and when Gordon Ramsays place is thrown into the occasion he is absolutely mortified! The brunch also included unlimited beer and at over 6 quid a pint these brunches are a god send. To cut a long story short we ate like kings and drank like fish, not that any of us could remember any of it the next day. Qatar is supposedly a dry country, well, the only dry things were out throats and pockets the following day. The only lasting memory was a near escape of the law for Danny and Ben after trying to enter the sacred ladies loos looking for a pissed up Claire. A toilet attendant later and out she emerges bright as beans ready to get back on the juice again following her hours 5 star porcelain power nap.
Claire dead excited
View from the table
Danny now certainly not sober (we were all shocked at this picture the next day)!!
Claire enjoying the comforts of a non porcelain bed
Ben and claire swimming off the hangover
Good old danny- hair of the dog
Enjoying it whilst it lasts
So, to keep it brief the following 4 days were a blur of sightseeing, drinking, relaxing and enjoying the 5 star hotel which we quickly got accustomed to.
Please Santa bring us one!!
Falconry is big in Qatar, look at these fine specimens for sale!
Don’t forget the aftercare………
Pipe darn Danny
Impressive Skyline at night
See you in Brazil
It was great to see Claire’s brother and also great to visit a country which is off the backpackers circuit. Qatar certainly is an impressive place with lots of sights and big events taking place weekly. We just missed the Man U team jetting in for some training in the sun- yeah not a bad miss we agree. When we left Doha on Monday evening two things could have made the atmosphere better, one, Danny could of found a rich sheikh to pay for Barnsleys ride from the relegation zone and two, knowing that it would be eighteen months before we saw Ben again in Brazil- ok, Brazil isn’t too bad a thought!
Come on England!!
